We were thrilled when Grand Central and the Bullring invited us back to one of our favourite venues in town, to help drive their Student Sessions night with a club chic vibe and a handful of 7x walkabout circus performers dotted around the stunning venue. Students flooded the shops to get some amazing discounts, whilst yours truly kept them entertained in cues with an array of circus skills including unicycle, stilt walking, trick skating, acrobatics, hula hooping, break dancing and some bright LED kit.
With a sterling recommendation by Danielle Bozward, Marketing Manager for Bullring & Grand Central, after we created a bespoke first birthday celebration for Grand Central in 2015, we worked closely marketing coordinator Jess Rowney, who was really keen to bring something young and hip to the space. After many discussions, we decided that a typical circus look wasn’t really right for the event, as we decided on something more modern, so we put together a mood board which explored a much trendier take on nightclub couture, while ensuring it didn’t take away from the actual circus performances on hand. The costumes were a bit outrageous, as expected in the design and style of director Zaq Andel. Looks varied from club glam sparkle, to glitter festival chic and cyber punk power, but they brought vibrancy and energy to the massive space, while the performers interacted with passer-bys. Jess was thoroughly impressed with the final result and felt it fit the brief perfectly and was exactly the thing she was looking for.
Over the course of 6 hours, over 10,000 students came through the space and our performers roamed around shops across the Bullring and Grand Central, offering pop-up performances and eventually culminating into a finale flashmob spectacle in front of Debenhams. We were accompanied by a Dj on the floor, cranking out some wicked tunes from old and new, while on the Selfridges side, an interactive photo booth gave students a chance to get a moving picture from all angles. Circus mayhem and debauchery, the performers populated the space and invaded the shops, encouraging students to soak up the amazing discounts on offer. Working all of the bottom floor of the Bullring, as well as the skywalk and the top floor of Grand Central, every corner you looked, you could expect to see one of our performers showing off. Charlee Oakton, Fran Widdowson, Lee Partridge, Miky Reighan, Nerina Orton, Pui Pang and Rachel Boxley were responsible for creating the circus mania and chaos that ensued that evening, lead by onsite direction from Zaq.
In the end, Jess from the Bullring & Grand Central commented, “Circus Mash really brought our Student Sessions event to life. Shoppers loved the roaming performances and the costumes fit perfectly with our club-chic vibe. The performers were amazing, thanks for pulling it all together. Thanks for an epic night!” We cannot lie Jess, we thought it was pretty epic too! Thank you so much for having us and letting us run riot around the shops, everyone seemed to really enjoy the event, our performers included.
We are very excited to be planning two future events with Bullring & Grand Central before the year is up, so watch this space for some exciting developments!
